Description:
While most students at Burtonwood Academy get to kill demons and goblins, fifteen-year-old Emma gets to rid the world of little annoying fairies with glittery wings and a hipster fashion sense. She was destined to be a dragon slayer, but cute and charming Curtis stole her spot. Then she sees a giant killer fairy - and it's invisible to everyone but her! If Emma has any chance of stopping this evil fairy, she's going to need help. Unfortunately, the only person who can help is Curtis. And now, not only has he stolen her dragon-slayer spot, but maybe her heart as well! Why does she think it's going to be a fairy bad day?
My Thoughts:
Fairy Bad Day is humorous and cute and action-packed and just a ball full of fun.
First of all, Ashby is fabulous with description. She is detailed without bogging the reader down. The world in this book is vivid; I felt like those little hipster fairies jumped off the page and buzzed around my head. I also loved the idea of some having the sight to see these paranormal creatures, while most people are "slight-blind". The boarding school for kids training to be slayers was a cool setting. I am always a little hesitant about boarding school settings (there are just so many of them!), but this one was a very unique.
Emma was a fun character to read about. She is this badass slayer who can't wait to slay dragons and make a name for herself like her mother, so you can imagine her anger when she gets stuck with slaying tiny fairies. She first sees Curtis as the enemy, the one who took her rightful place. But of course swoony Curtis wins her over. The romance was really cute and sweet in this one.
I loved all the action. Lots of cool swords and weapons the slayers use, but how hilarious what Emma found out kills fairies! Fairy Bad Day is exactly the kind of read I look for in the summer. It is a fun way to spend a lazy afternoon. So if you are looking for a fun paranormal, add this one to your list!

I've got this on my TBR list already. It does sound like a fun book-it reminds me of Hex Hall and Paranormalcy. I think Emma is a character I'd like and the humor and romance are an added bonus. Great review!
ReplyDeleteThis one sounds great. I have been looking for more books to read with my daughter. She is 11 but at a higher reading level. I think we will both enjoy this book. Thank you sharing your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteJami - thanks so much for the lovely review!!! I'm so pleased you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteChristina - I'm actually reading Hex Hall 2 right now! It's so cool!
Anon - I hope you and your daughter enjoy it (it's definitely fine for an 11 year old reader, which explains why I had no problem making the transition to writing mid-grade books since I my voice seems to fit there!!!)
